Obama's day

Mr Barack Obama, who at the age 47 will become one of the United States' youngest president, was a runaway success with young voters. He won the under-30 crowd with 66per cent of the voters, versus 31 per cent for 72-year-old John Mccain, according to nationwide exit polls of 18,000 Americans. President-elect barack Obama positioned himself as a candidate for all Americans and the polls may be proof that his efforts paid off.

Mr Obama seemed to inspire optimism about race in America. About 60 per cent of those who voted for him believe race relations will improve over the next few years, and only 7 per cent predict they will detetriorate.

The Obama presidency will be closely watched to see whether it grants tangible future benefits to the black community, especially in impoverished inner cities, and how it handles the still open wounds in the US.

Clearly, Obama will be the pricinpal agenda-setter. Sweet as it sounds, for Obama, there is no time to savour unprecendented victory. Unprecendented challenges await him. He must immediately confront the worst economic conditions since the 1930s Great Depression, determine the next steps in the two lingering wars, and lead his Democrats, including liberals expecting that the change he promises will come instantly.

Key messages to the world:

1. This our moment. This is our time... that out of many, we are one; that while we breath, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond...Yes, we can.

2. It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.

3. To all those watching tonight from beyond our shores...our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leardership is at hand.

4. To those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may no have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your president too.

5. Let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of service and responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other...in this country, we rise or fall as one nation, as one people.

6. Above all, I will never forgot who this victory truly belongs to - it belongs to you.

7. The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America, I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there.

Let's wait for his arrival. CHANGE IS COMING!!!
